About

About Debatery

A free place to see both sides of the questions worth arguing about.

Debatery is a free resource for students and teachers. It sets out both sides of the questions that matter, from school rules to world affairs, so that anyone can understand an issue before deciding what they think.

What you'll find here

  • Pro and con guides. Each guide opens with an introduction full of real cases, figures and history, then gives the strongest arguments on each side with sources, the key clashes, and questions for discussion.
  • A Motion Bank of thousands of motions used at real debate tournaments around the world, searchable by theme and format.
  • Articles that explain the background to the debates in the news.
  • Free practice tools: a debate timer for every major format, a team generator, a random motion picker, and resources for the classroom.

Who it's for

Students preparing for a debate, writing an essay or simply trying to make sense of an issue. Teachers looking for ready-to-use material for class discussion, debate practice and lessons on current affairs. And anyone who wants to hear the other side of an argument before making up their mind.

Our mission

We believe that good arguments make better thinkers. Debatery exists to support education and teaching by giving everyone the same free access to balanced, well-sourced material. But we also hope it does something bigger: that it opens readers' eyes to the wider world, to the people, places and histories behind each debate, and to the reasons thoughtful people disagree. If a guide leaves you more curious than when you arrived, it has done its job.

How guides are made

Every guide is written by the Debatery Editing Team and reviewed before it is published. We present both sides as fairly as we can and do not take a position. Sources are listed at the end of each guide and credited to their publishers.
